Departure
Farnborough, Luton or Biggin Hill: leaving London
Three airports handle most private departures from London to the Gulf. Each suits a different starting point, schedule and aircraft.

Ask where to start a private flight to Dubai and the honest answer is: wherever gets you to the aircraft fastest on the day. London is served by several business aviation airports, and three of them are the usual choices for long-range departures to the Gulf. They are different places, and the right one depends on where your journey begins, what time you want to leave and which aircraft is flying.
The short answer
Choose Farnborough for a dedicated business aviation airport on the west and south-west side of London. Choose Luton for the north of the city and the M1 corridor. Choose Biggin Hill for the shortest drive from the City, Canary Wharf and south-east London. All three see long-range business jets every day, and any of them can start a nonstop flight to Dubai in a suitable aircraft.
Farnborough
Farnborough sits in Hampshire, roughly 35 miles south-west of central London. It is given over entirely to business aviation, with no scheduled airline flights, which is the main reason many travellers prefer it: the terminal, ramp and air traffic are all built around private aircraft. It is well placed for west London, Surrey and Berkshire, and the drive from Mayfair often takes around an hour, traffic permitting.
The airport operates within agreed limits on its yearly and weekend aircraft movements. In practice that rarely affects a single trip, but popular weekend departures are worth booking early, particularly in summer and before the Christmas holidays.
Luton
London Luton lies in Bedfordshire, about 30 miles north of central London. It is a busy airline airport, but private flights use their own terminals on a separate side of the field, so you never walk through the airline terminal. Luton is often the quickest choice from north London, Hertfordshire and anywhere along the M1, and it is a long-standing base for long-range business jets.
Because it shares a runway with airline traffic, departure times at the busiest hours can need a little more planning. The operator files the flight plan and arranges the slot; you simply choose the time that suits you, and we confirm it before you book.
Biggin Hill
Biggin Hill is in the London Borough of Bromley, roughly 15 miles south-east of central London. It is the closest of the three to the City and Canary Wharf, and a natural choice from Kent and south-east London. Like Farnborough, it has no scheduled airline service.
The airport keeps set opening hours, so very early or very late departures need checking before anything is confirmed. For a heavy long-range departure, the operator also confirms runway length against the aircraft’s performance with full fuel; most long-range jets manage comfortably, but it is one more check on the list.
| Airport | Location | Convenient for | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Farnborough (FAB) | Hampshire, about 35 miles SW | West London, Surrey, Berkshire | Business aviation only; plan busy weekends early |
| Luton (LTN) | Bedfordshire, about 30 miles N | North London, Hertfordshire, the M1 | Airline airport with separate private terminals |
| Biggin Hill (BQH) | Bromley, about 15 miles SE | The City, Canary Wharf, Kent | Closest to the centre; set opening hours |
Distances are approximate, measured from central London. Drive times vary widely with traffic and time of day.
What the day of departure looks like
At all three airports you arrive at a private terminal, not an airline building. For an international flight, plan to be there about 30 minutes before departure. The terminal handles passport control and any security checks in a fraction of the time an airline terminal takes, your bags go straight to the aircraft, and the crew meets you before boarding. Cars can usually drop you at the terminal door.
Bring passports for everyone travelling, and tell us in advance about anything unusual in the luggage, such as sports equipment or large cases, so the operator can plan the load for a seven-hour flight with full fuel.
UK taxes on the way out
Air Passenger Duty applies to flights departing UK airports, and most business jets pay it at a higher rate than airline tickets. It is charged per passenger and appears as its own line on our quotes, alongside airport and handling charges, so it never arrives as a surprise; anything genuinely unpredictable is listed separately as a possible extra.
Getting there on time
The drive is the part of the journey nobody controls. Farnborough is reached by the M3, Luton by the M1 and Biggin Hill through south-east London, and each has its rush hours. For an early-morning departure, the airport nearest your home usually beats the one nearest your office; for a mid-afternoon departure after a meeting in the City, Biggin Hill’s short drive can save the better part of an hour.
If plans slip, the aircraft can usually wait within the crew’s duty limits and the airport’s opening hours, but a long delay can push a departure into a later slot. Tell your advisor as soon as timings change, and the operator will adjust the flight plan where it can.
When the airport changes the price
The departure airport can move the price more than people expect. If the best-placed aircraft for your dates is based at Luton, starting there avoids a short positioning flight that would otherwise be added to the quote. When the difference is meaningful, we show you both options so you can weigh a longer drive against a lower price.
Which one we’d suggest
Start with the airport nearest to where you will be on the morning of the flight, then let us check three things: which suitable aircraft are positioned nearby, whether the airport’s hours and slots fit your departure time, and whether the runway suits the aircraft for a full-fuel departure. When two airports are equally good, we quote both. You choose, and the rest is our job.
